October 2015: Artist Talk at Fitzwilliam Museum

2-3pm, Sunday 25 October, Fitzwilliam Museum

Artist Emma Smith, Open House resident artist for 2015, introduces her sources of inspiration and discusses her residency and artistic practice.

Open House is a creative collaboration between communities of North Cambridge and Kettle’s Yard. Smith’s residency has been inspired by 16th century casebooks which note the ailments, whether physical or social, of the population and ‘prescribed’ solutions of astrologers Forman and Napier. Her work also reflects founder of Kettle’s Yard, Jim Ede, who would welcome soldiers on leave from Gibraltar to his home in Tangiers for a cultural ‘respite’ in their duties.
Smith will introduce these sources of inspiration and discuss her Open House residency and artistic practice.

February 2014: New Publication: Collective Praxis

Following on from a series of peer-to-peer workshops in Autumn/Winter 2012 as part of ongoing research into social practice, Spacex have now printed a publication to expand on this research.  The workshops opened up a space to share experience, engage in peer critique and reflect critically on where theory meets practice when artists develop collaborative or participatory projects. Each session was led by a UK based practitioner with extensive experience of working with social practice; Emma Smith, Lotte Juul Petersen, Nuno Sacramento, Sophie Hope and Emily Druiff.

The publication aims to disseminate these discussions with texts by Martha Crean, Sophie Hope and Emma Smith.
