Communications Department, 2017

Commissioned by Art on the Underground for Tate Exchange London, Smith created the Communications Department as an immersive public research platform to test modes of communication between neighbours and strangers. Occupying the 5th floor of Tate Modern’s Blavatnik Building, Smith created a programme of activities testing the relationship of the body, language, communication and code including musical telegraphy, cryptograms, morse, BSL, speech, gesture, music, steganography, and censorship.
