N+1 is a musical railing that shares the sounds made by plant roots from the surrounding park. The work can be played by the public by running a stick along it.
Set to specific lengths and spacings the sound produced by the railings is based on high frequency recordings of the subterranean communications of plant roots from species in the surrounding park, transposed into the human hearing range.
The railing is the length of a standard allotment patch and curves through the grass in the form of a sound wave. The work recognises the history of this site as allotment gardens that were built on in the 1800s and are now returned to green space on this patch of land. The work invites us to attend to the sonic communications of our plant hosts.
This work was created through co-research into the Cambridge allotment movement and accompanying engagement programme and digital work Phuplec.
